Driven by Teabing's manservant Rémy Legaludec, the vehicle navigates the moonlit fields behind the estate, moving without headlights to avoid detection, and crosses an open knoll before descending a long slope toward a wooded area. The Range Rover's off-road capability proves essential as it traverses rough terrain, splashes through water, and climbs a small rise, eventually reaching a forest trail that leads to the shoulder of a highway, allowing the group to evade the police and proceed to Le Bourget Airfield for their flight to England.
Role in the Escape and Confinement
Inside the Range Rover, the group's dynamics shift as they flee. Langdon cradles the keystone, a stone cylinder that holds the map to the Holy Grail, while Teabing, armed with the monk's pistol, keeps watch over the bound and gagged Silas, who lies in the cramped luggage area behind the back seat. The vehicle's interior becomes a mobile prison for Silas, who is lashed with kitchen twine and duct tape, his breathing restricted by the tape over his mouth. The Range Rover's soundproof partition, which can be raised to seal off the rear compartment, is later used by Teabing to isolate Silas and prevent him from hearing the group's conversations. The vehicle's rugged design and four-wheel drive allow it to traverse the muddy, uneven terrain of the forest, ensuring the group's escape from the immediate pursuit of the French police.
Theft and Abandonment
The Range Rover is stolen from Teabing's barn at Château Villette, where it was kept among a collection of luxury cars including a Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, and Porsche. The vehicle's keys are taken from a pegboard, and the empty peg signals to Lieutenant Collet that the fugitives have escaped in the Range Rover. The vehicle is later abandoned by Rémy, who drives it to a secluded location near St. James's Park in London, where Teabing, posing as the Teacher, retrieves the keystone and kills Rémy by poisoning his cognac. The Range Rover, with Rémy's body inside, is left behind as Teabing proceeds to Westminster Abbey to decipher the final clue. The vehicle's role in the narrative ends as a discarded tool, its utility exhausted once the keystone is secured and the conspirators' plans shift to the abbey.
